Like most museums the Santa Barbara Historical Museum (SBHM) has a large portion of its collection that is inaccessible to the public due to space and funding constraints. And also like many historical museums much of their historical record has not yet been digitized for internet searching and retrieval, a situation particularly true for old photographs and negative. In 2017 The Schwemm Foundation assisted the SBHM with a project to digitize a portion of their collection of glass negatives containing unique images collected in the Santa Barbara region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Projects like this often include the need for specialized equipment such as scanners, and software for digitizing and cataloguing digital images, and the development of best practices. The Schwemm Foundation is excited to have supported this effort to make local history available to the Santa Barbara community.
